Steele

I’m playing a role for the evening, that of Brea Baylon’s date to the charity ball. Just some random guy. No pressure. Nothing serious. Just taking up space on her arm.

But with the way she looks in her burgundy lace evening gown, low cut in the front with a diamond pendant dangling between her generous cleavage, and her dark hair curled in old movie-star-style waves, it’s hard to remember that this is a front.

It’s hard to ignore how much I really want to be the man at her side.

Something shifted for me in the past couple of days since meeting her. Something that brought me from being a carefree man who doesn’t get involved romantically with anyone, from looking at her as my babysitting charge, to feeling a kinship with her the moment we walked into her condo. Kinship that became admiration, and now that admiration is becoming something…more.

All night long—through drinks, appetizers, mingling, dinner—people have been coming up to her nonstop to say hello, ask her questions, gently give her their support with the news of the release of her kidnappers. It’s set my nerves on edge—I don’t want any one of them getting too close to my client. To my…Brea.

But I’ve stood solidly at her side, making eye contact as I shake their hands, letting each person know I see them. I’m probably doing too much, but I don’t know these people. To each of them, Brea has graciously introduced me as her date, Ethan, and told them I’m in security. When pressed for additional information, I sidestep. Perhaps not so graciously.

After the speeches and when the dancing begins, Brea tugs on my arm. “You need to chill.”

“What’s that mean?” I joke, then shake my head. “Brea, in my line of work, I rarely chill. And certainly not while I’m working.”

“Ah.” She casts a sidelong look at me. Her green eyes glimmer in the candlelight. “So tonight is work? I thought you were my guest. My date.”

“I’m all of those things, but my priority is keeping you safe.” My voice comes out suddenly low, velvety, and there’s a shift in the air between us so palpable I can feel it, deep in my chest and the pit of my stomach.

Her lips curve, and I can’t stop my eyes from shooting down to them. God, I want to taste them. “Then how about you put your date hat on for two seconds, and dance with me?”

“Dance?” I lift an eyebrow.

The small orchestra is playing soft jazz and several couples are already on the dancefloor, swaying and chatting.

“Don’t tell me you’re afraid,” she challenges.

I smirk. “I don’t know the meaning of the word.” I stand up and hold out my hand. “Come then, Lady Brea.”

She grabs my hand and rises, and the huge, radiant smile that spreads across her face nearly takes my breath away. It might be the first time I’ve really seen her smile.

I lead her out onto the dancefloor, whirl her around, then tug her against me. She giggles, then drapes her arms over my shoulders.
